“GRPS Champions” is a web series published every Monday celebrating the incredible work of GRPS team members.
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (GRPS) – For the head secretary at Union High School, she likens her experience each year to watching "saplings" develop strong roots and blossom into "amazing budding trees" -- a process she especially cherishes each May when scholars graduate.
"Helping students discover their potential is one of the most rewarding parts of my work," Ivonne Melara says.
Her career path to this point was not a straight line. After graduating from Calvin University’s education program and completing student teaching at GRPS, she pursued a career in software testing and quality control. However, her passion for education and service drew her back to GRPS.
Her influence at Union High School goes far beyond administrative duties. Melara views her role as helping scholars find ownership in their school community, involving them in announcements, pep rallies, and school TV messages.
"I want students to know their opinions matter," she shares, noting that her open-door approach helps scholars feel valued and heard. It’s an approach that has led many to affectionately call her the "school mom."
Melara is also passionate about creating a safe and supportive environment. For her, true safety is rooted in a community where every scholar feels respected and confident to voice their concerns. She often references an African proverb: “The child who is not embraced by the village will come back to burn it down, just to feel its warmth.”
Melara emphasizes that fostering a culture of care—rather than relying solely on physical security measures—helps scholars feel empowered and secure.
Her dedication to Union High School has made Melara an integral part of the school community, a champion for scholar voice, and an advocate for a supportive, safe environment. Through her leadership, Melara continues to cultivate a place where everyone can grow and thrive.
