GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (GRPS) -- Several generations impacted by Harrison Park Academy packed the school to celebrate its 100th anniversary on Oct. 17.

"It's not just about the school building itself," said GRPS Superintendent Dr. Leadriane Roby. "It really is about our community. Events like this is what makes Grand Rapids Public Schools so special."

Current Harrison Park scholars and staff contributed to a time capsule that was buried in the courtyard.

"All of our classes here at Harrison made something to put in the time capsule," explained Harrison Park Academy Principal Brad Moore. "There's photos and there's messages on the backs of those photos. We're going to bury that in the courtyard today."

The event was a time for those who have walked the halls of Harrison Park over the past century to come together.

For a couple married for more than 60 years, the event was a return to where it all began. "We were going steady here in 56, 57 - friendship rings they were called back in the day," explained Michael Virkstis.

"It's wonderful that it's still here," added his wife, Marjory Virkstis. "It's just absolutely great because we have such good memories of it."

"I have a lot of wonderful memories of the school because I love this school so much," said Linda Dronkers, who also attended Harrison Park in the 1950s.

"100 years ago, a vision was born, rooted in the belief that education could transform lives and empower individuals to change the world," declared Rebecca Cisek, a current teacher at Harrison Park. "Over the years, our scholars, staff, family and community partners have proven this to be true."

The celebration also included a performance by the Harrison Park Academy Choir, dinner and cupcakes, games, building tours and much more.
