GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (GRPS) — Dickinson Academy Chief Community Builder Brandon Martinez was drawn to GRPS by the mission of the Promise Neighborhoods program — advocating for scholars and families while strengthening school communities.

“I’m passionate about encouraging informed decisions for safer, healthier, happier, and more economically viable communities,” Martinez said. “I see our scholars grow every day from cleaning up trash on our playground, and saying ‘Excuse me,’ to choosing to save their scholar dollars when they visit our ROAR store.”

He believes the foundation of strong communities begins with authenticity and joy.

“I strive to be authentically me, and encourage the scholars to do the same as we find unity in diversity,” he said. “Being silly and having fun are fundamental to learning and developing a positive community.”

He enjoys showing up every day to serve alongside the dedicated team at Dickinson Academy.

“We have such a wonderful team of staff, scholars, and parents, who embody tenacity and resilience, while growing in exciting ways,” said Martinez.

From supporting staff projects to giving presentations and leading daily announcements, scholars at Dickinson are encouraged to take ownership of their school experience. Martinez said one of his favorite parts of the job is celebrating those moments of achievement.

“I personally enjoy helping with awards assemblies where many parents and guardians show up with flowers or balloons for their scholars, creating an empowering and affirming moment,” he shared.

Working with students from Early Childhood through 8th grade gives Martinez a front-row seat to the full spectrum of growth and learning.

“Working with such a dynamic spread often leaves me feeling like I'm learning as much from them as they are from me,” Martinez reflected. “I take pleasure in watching scholars mirror my energy with jokes, dances, and quirkiness as they build the confidence to be seen and heard.”
