GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (GRPS) -- Three GRPS scholars were announced as winners of the 21st Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Social Justice Legacy Contest.

The contest, open to all GRPS sixth graders, is sponsored by Seyferth PR. Scholars were asked to identify and react to a social justice issue that is meaningful to them. 183 scholars from nine schools submitted entries.

This year’s winners are:

Grand Prize: Liyana Anderson, North Park Montessori Academy

  • Apple iPad, two tickets to The Lion King

First Runner Up: My’on Welch, Grand Rapids Montessori Academy

  • Amazon Fire HD 8 plus tablet with a wireless charging dock, two tickets to The Lion King

Second Runner Up: Rose Ward, Grand Rapids Montessori Academy

  • $100 gift card to We are LIT! Multicultural Bookshop, two tickets to The Lion King

Honorable mention winners also received a $25 gift card to We are LIT! Multicultural Bookshop.

“I hope they think about how how messed up is to treat somebody differently just because of their skin tone,” Liyana said. “If people read or see art that actually expresses that, then people may think, well, these kids are changing, so why shouldn't we.”

The entries will be on display at the Grand Rapids Public Museum throughout the month of February.
