GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (GRPS) — Power outages Wednesday morning have caused three Grand Rapids Public Schools buildings to dismiss early and cancel classes for the remainder of the day.

Westwood Middle School — Students were dismissed at 9 a.m. Bussing has been arranged and parents are being contacted with an automated phone call. The Facilities Master Plan Meeting originally scheduled for this morning has been cancelled. We have not yet cancelled the evening Town Hall. We will make a final call on the evening event by 3 p.m. Please check back for updates.

Sibley Elementary School — Students will be dismissed at 9:30 a.m. Bussing has been arranged and parents are being contacted with an automated phone call.

Union High School / Union High Transition / Newcomers — Students will be dismissed at 9:30 a.m. Transportation arrangements with the RAPID busses has been arranged and parents are being contacted with an automated phone call.

At this moment, these are the only schools impacted by the outages. Classes at all other district schools are continuing as scheduled.

Consumers Energy officials have indicated that they expect power to be restored before the end of the day. The district will post updates at GRPS.org. If electricity is not restored, a decision to cancel school will be made before 11 p.m.
