Welcome to Sherwood Park Global Studies Academy (PK-6) & Ken-O-Sha Park Elementary (PK-5)

Welcome and thank you for choosing Sherwood Park Global Studies Academy and Ken-O-Sha Park Elementary, I am Abbie Marr. I have had the honor to have served in the Grand Rapids Public School District since 2004! The past 4 years, I have had the privilege of being the principal here at Ken-O-Sha Park Elementary, and now - Sherwood Park Global Studies Academy.

Some of the things I love about our school is the community and culture! We have over 80 combined years of educational experience and our diverse scholar population make Sherwood Park and Ken-O-Sha a great place to learn and grow.

For more information about our learning community, please call 616-819-3095. I look forward meeting you in person very soon!

Meet Our Principal

Sherwood Park Global Studies Academy

At Sherwood Park Global Studies Academy, our mission is to provide scholars with opportunities to investigate the world.

Our scholars are taught to recognize perspectives, create questions, communicate ideas, take action, and value differences. We conduct inquiry-based learning, engage in service learning projects, and promote life experiences that enhance global awareness. We encourage scholars to be lifelong learners.

Sherwood Park Global Studies Academy is an authorized International Baccalaureate (IB) World School offering the Primary Years Programme (PYP). Sherwood promotes the learning of new knowledge and skills through a commitment to high-quality, challenging, and inquiry-based education. As an IB World School, each grade level, pre-K-6th, explores our world through six transdisciplinary units that focus on the development of the whole child (academic, social, and emotional):

  • Who we are
  • Where we are in place and time
  • How we express ourselves
  • How the world works
  • How we organize ourselves
  • Sharing the planet

These units are taught with an emphasis on collaboration, global mindedness, digital literacy, and scholar agency. In addition to the six transdisciplinary units, each scholar has an additional Spanish and Global Studies class elective.  To learn more about our International Baccalaureate World School Programme at GRPS, check out our Points of Pride or request a tour of our school.

Ken-O-Sha Park Elementary

Ken-O-Sha: where nature and the neighborhood meet!

Ken-O-Sha Park Elementary is located in the southeast side of Grand Rapids adjacent to the Ken-O-Sha Park and nature trail. Our scholars, families, and neighbors have fond memories of our annual Duck Walk and the wildlife that can be found around our school.

In our school and the surrounding Ken-O-Sha Park, our culturally diverse scholars have the opportunity to participate in hands-on learning. The park serves as a natural classroom where scholars learn about native prairie plants, the Plaster Creek Watershed, and animals that inhabit the area. This learning continues inside of the classroom, where scholars experience an academic curriculum that provides the foundation they need to be successful at the next level. At Ken-O-Sha our scholars continue to show growth on math and reading assessments.

We have incorporated distance learning for years and are poised to be a leader in the district as a blended model of new technologies and old practices, giving our students the best of both worlds. Our 1-to-1 student technology device approach ensures that every student has the opportunity to learn inside and outside the classroom.
