The Office of English Learners ensures academic achievement for all English Learners by promoting English language proficiency through rigorous instruction that integrates both content and language learning and by valuing our scholars' rich language and cultural backgrounds.

GRPS Cultural Centers


Grand Rapids Public Schools serves families representing many different languages and cultures. Data representing the diverse English Learner population within our district demonstrates the demand of needed services and resources to the diverse scholars we serve.

English Learner Models:

Dual Language Immersion assures proficiency by building a high level of skill or competency in two languages. Instruction is given in both English and Spanish in classrooms that typically have half native English speakers and half native Spanish speakers.

Dual Language Immersion Offered At:

The English as a Second Language (ESL) program uses special methods and curriculum to teach English to students whose native language is not English. 

Listening, speaking, reading, writing, study skills, vocabulary, and cultural orientation (information related to native English language speakers) is provided through the ESL program.

ESL Programming Offered At:

The Transitional Bilingual model utilizes a scholar's primary language for instruction. It develops skills in the primary language and culture while introducing and developing skills in English. Scholars enrolled at a school designated Transitional Bilingual will receive ESL instruction and/or native language instruction.

English Learner Handbooks


English Learner handbooks provide program descriptions and guidelines for parents and/or legal guardians. Updated in 2022.
