RIGOROUS ACADEMICS

Union staff are working hard to ensure that students are meeting and exceeding their goals. As a result, the percentage of students meeting college readiness benchmarks has tripled over the past 5 years. Students are developing the important skills they need to be college and career-ready!

COMMITTED TEACHERS

The teachers at Union are committed to student success. They go above and beyond to ensure that students’ needs are met, that parents are involved in their child’s education and that students have a positive experience. In a recent survey, 100% of parents said the school provides their child with additional support when needed.

GLOBAL FEEL

Union High has a diverse student population. There are more than 17 languages spoken and nearly a third of Union households speak a language other than English. Union offers support for bilingual and English language learners through the Newcomers Program, cultural center services, and bilingual staff.

PARENTS AS PARTNERS

Union values parents as partners in their child’s education. Parents are regularly involved as volunteers and participate in many family events throughout the year. According to a recent parent survey, 100% of parents feel welcome at Union.

STUDENT SAFETY

Staff at Union take a fair, firm, and consistent approach to discipline. In fact, 95% of parents said they see that the school’s rules are consistently enforced for all students. This approach is paired with a program known as Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support (PBIS), which recognizes students for making good choices and showing positive behavior. The result is a safe and secure learning environment.

UNION STUDENTS CAN GET TUITION-FREE COLLEGE!*

Challenge Scholars understands the hard work that goes into reaching college and achieving success once there. In partnership with the Grand Rapids Community Foundation, students who start at Union High School in 9th grade and graduate with all four years at Union High are eligible for two years of tuition-free* college at Grand Rapids Community College.

JUST FOLLOW THESE STEPS:

  • Students keep their grades at or above a 2.0 GPA
  • Students have no 180-day expulsions

START AT WESTWOOD OR HARRISON PARK FOR UP TO
4 YEARS OF TUITION-FREE COLLEGE!*

Starting at Harrison Park or Westwood Middle School in 6th grade and then following with Union High School for four years, students will become eligible for up to four years of tuition-free* college by achieving at least a 2.0 GPA, 95% attendance, and no 180-day expulsions.

The Vision of Union High School is to develop confident, accountable, competent and responsible lifelong learners who are college and career ready.
In order to accomplish this, we will:

  • Establish a culture for learning that challenges students through diverse learning opportunities, establishes high expectations and provides targeted intervention and support.
  • Provide a safe and nurturing environment - one that celebrates and promotes student growth and accomplishments. Union High Logo
  • Create a professional environment that prioritizes self-reflection, collaboration and timely feedback.
  • Inform and involve parents and families as partners in the educational process so that they can make informed decisions and effectively support their children.
  • Ensure that all students have opportunities to experience success and develop positive relationships with their peers and the school staff.
  • Ensure that every student regardless of race, ethnicity, socio-economic status, gender, sexual orientation, or religion will be included, valued, and supported.
