GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (GRPS) – With Grand Rapids experiencing a boom in the hospitality and tourism sectors, thanks to new hotels, restaurants, an amphitheater, and a soccer stadium in development, Ottawa Hills High School is preparing the next generation to lead these industries.
In collaboration with Experience Grand Rapids, Grand Rapids Public Schools celebrated the academy’s Grand Reopening on Oct. 15, signaling a renewed commitment to fostering talent in this high-demand field. GRPS Superintendent Dr. Leadriane Roby emphasized the program’s broader vision.
"This isn’t just about training for jobs,” Dr. Roby said. “It’s about empowering the next generation of leaders in hospitality and tourism. I am incredibly proud to be part of a district that responds to community needs by investing in programs that open doors for our young people to thrive."
"Hospitality and tourism is a field with endless career paths, whether you're passionate about food, technology, human resources, sales, services, event planning, cultural tourism, DEIB or even marketing," said Experience Grand Rapids Vice President of Engagement and Inclusion Jordoun Eatman. Mr. Eatman is also a Grand Rapids Board of Education Trustee. "It's an industry that offers something for everyone and it takes you places - literally."
Originally launched in 2019, the Academy of Hospitality & Tourism is now reinvigorated with a full-time instructor, Lillie “Jan” McGregory.
“By sparking a passion for hospitality and tourism, while also teaching the importance of making a positive impact, we are shaping future leaders who will create lasting change in their communities and beyond," McGregory said.
The Grand Reopening is the latest in a series of celebrations at Ottawa Hills High School.
“Over the past year, we've opened a state-of-the-art Music Production and Entrepreneurship Studio, upgraded our weight room, and built brand-new tennis courts," said Ottawa Hills Principal Dr. Timothy Mabin. "Each addition reflects our ongoing commitment to expanding opportunities for our scholars."
GRPS Board of Education President Kimberley Williams echoed this sentiment, saying, "Our message is clear: We are committed to not only elevating Ottawa Hills High School but ensuring it remains a beacon of excellence for our community."
Looking ahead, Experience Grand Rapids has plans to expand the academy’s reach to eight schools across Kent County, including additional GRPS high schools, by the 2025-26 school year.
