“GRPS Champions” is a web series published every Monday celebrating the incredible work of GRPS team members.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (GRPS) – At Campus Elementary, second-grade teacher Brooke Nelson embodies a spirit of collaboration, community, and care. With a passion for teaching and a dedication to her scholars, she highlights the unique blend of support and purpose that drives her work in Grand Rapids Public Schools.

"One part of my job that I really enjoy is getting to collaborate and work with the other very talented staff in my building,” Nelson shared. “We are like a family at CampUS, and I feel very supported, encouraged, and equipped to do my job with the support of those around me.”

Nelson’s journey is deeply rooted in her sense of calling.

“I chose to work for GRPS because I feel it is the work God has called me to do,” she said. “I have always loved working with kids, and the scholars I have gotten to teach at GRPS are some of the most hard-working, capable, and genuine scholars. I love the community I have found at GRPS and also the many opportunities I have been given. I have grown so much and learned a lot through being an educator working in this district.”

In her classroom, Nelson builds a friendly environment for scholars and colleagues alike.

“I try my best to create a safe and welcoming place for any scholar or staff member in my building. I hope that when others visit my classroom, they leave feeling more loved, uplifted, and empowered.”

Nelson’s words shine a light on the commitment of GRPS educators to nurturing not just academic growth but also a strong, supportive community where scholars and staff thrive together.
