GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (GRPS) — The Grand Rapids Public Schools joins the family and loved ones of Ms. Olivia Margo Anderson in mourning her passing Friday morning.
Ms. Anderson served the Grand Rapids Public Schools as an educator for more than 30 years. She was a teacher, counselor, assistant principal, and principal before retiring in 2000.
Even after retirement, her passion for education and service to the community continued. She was elected to the Grand Rapids Community College Board of Trustees shortly after leaving the district. She served for many years on the board and held leadership positions.
“Ms. Anderson’s legacy remains a part of the Grand Rapids Public Schools,” GRPS Superintendent Leadriane Roby, Ph.D. said. “Her legacy lives on through the lives she touched and those she mentored who continue to use what she taught them in service to our children today.”
Earlier this year Ms. Anderson was recognized with the Distinguished Alumni Award from Grand Rapids Community College.
In an article honoring Ms. Anderson, GRCC officials wrote that she “focused on inclusion and equity during her time on the board, working to ensure a life-changing education was within reach of all residents”.
