“GRPS Champions” is a web series published every Monday celebrating the incredible work of GRPS team members.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (GRPS) -- Maria Mateo, the head secretary at Dickinson Academy, is more than just the friendly face that greets families each day. She's a pillar of support for the entire school community.

Mateo’s dedication to Grand Rapids Public Schools spans decades, driven by her passion for connecting with parents, scholars, and staff.

“I enjoy meeting new parents and students, helping them with whatever they may need,” Mateo shared.

Her journey with GRPS began long before her current role. As a child, Mateo attended Hall Elementary, Burton Middle School, and Central High School, where she graduated in 1981.

“I really liked the staff and everyone that helped me along the way with my education. I enjoyed my experiences at the three schools I attended,” she said.

She quickly realized that she could continue that legacy by serving the community she grew up in.

As a youth, she worked for GRPS during summer breaks. That commitment blossomed into a career in 1994 when she became part of the support staff at Burton Elementary. In 2013, she joined Dickinson Academy, where her influence has only grown.

“I believe that all administrative assistants take on the role as the glue that helps keep the school and families together,” she explained. “I enjoy taking on the role of serving my community and families in school.”

Her enduring dedication to GRPS is a testament to her belief in the power of education and community. Through her warmth and deep commitment, Mateo continues to make a difference in the lives of countless scholars and families, embodying the very spirit of a GRPS Champion.
