“GRPS Champions” is a web series published every Monday celebrating the incredible work of GRPS team members.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (GRPS) -- Marques Young understands the power of a positive attitude. As a Quadrant Supervisor for Facilities Planning and Management at Grand Rapids Public Schools, Young feels a deep sense of responsibility in creating a clean and safe environment for scholars and staff.

"For some of our scholars, this may be the cleanest and safest place in their lives," he shares. "Knowing that I can make a difference in their daily experience is what I enjoy most about my job."

Working at GRPS is more than just a job - it’s a continuation of a family legacy. His father served as a custodian from 2001 until his retirement in 2015, and Marques himself attended Creston High School. This personal connection to the district is something he carries with pride, as he works each day to support the same community that helped shape him.

As a Quadrant Supervisor, Young brings his commitment to excellence and leadership to his role, but his dedication to customer service is what truly sets him apart.

“You need to do the work, but having good customer service makes the job easier. Being polite and having a smile on your face goes a long way,” he explains.

Young takes pride in greeting everyone he encounters with kindness and warmth, knowing how much it can impact someone's day.

“I’ve had people tell me they were having a rough day, but my smile and politeness helped lift their spirits.”

As a GRPS Champion, Young exemplifies what it means to make a difference by fostering a welcoming, positive space for everyone.
