GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (GRPS) -- For Principal Aaron Roussey, Union High School is more than just a place of learning - it’s a family. “We always say once you’re a Redhawk, you’re always a Redhawk.”

With two decades of experience at Union High School, Roussey has cultivated a deep connection to the school and its community, shaping his leadership style to prioritize scholar support and staff empowerment.

His journey in education was inspired by influential teachers and mentors from his own youth.

“Why did I get into education? That was really fostered by teachers that I had growing up and mentors that I had growing up,” he explained. “I wanted to have that same impact on scholars here.”

A Grand Rapids native, Roussey began his higher education at Grand Rapids Community College before transferring to Western Michigan University. He later earned his master’s degree at Aquinas College.

His professional career started at Campus Elementary, where he worked as both a student teacher and a full-time teacher before moving to Union High School.

“I taught special education here,” Roussey recounted. “And then I kind of kept getting asked to get into different leadership roles and just accepted those based on hoping to have a bigger impact on more kids.”

“Leaders have the ability to make a great impact,” he said. “That starts with supporting your teaching staff, supporting kids, building relationships, modeling those things you want to see within the building.”

One of his primary goals is to ensure that Union High School is a welcoming space for every scholar.

“I want to make sure that kids feel welcome as they walk through the doors,” Roussey said. “The very first thing this place has to be is a place they want to be. I don’t think there’s anything more important than all staff being welcoming to kids. I know I had that growing up, and I try to emulate that.”

“Our scholars are fantastic. Our teaching staff and support staff are here to support you. They care. We will do everything possible to try to put you in the best position to succeed.”
