GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (GRPS) -- Grand Rapids Public Schools has received a second grant to help implement electric school buses.

The State of Michigan awarded GRPS $1.48 million from Michigan’s Clean School Bus grant program. GRPS is one of 29 Michigan school districts to receive the grant.

The funding, coupled with $5.2 million awarded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in May, will go toward the purchase of electric school buses and the charging infrastructure to support those buses.

Dean Transportation assisted in securing both grants on behalf of GRPS.

"The cost to purchase and implement electric school buses is great, but we know the positive impact on our community is even greater," said Dean Transportation Director of Innovation Christopher Dean. "We have been hard at work for several years to secure funding for this project. This grant marks an exciting milestone that will allow us to move forward."

The goal is to have the first electric school buses on the road transporting GRPS scholars in 2025.
