GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (GRPS) — Grand Rapids Public Schools public safety and school security officers confiscated a handgun after metal detectors at the school entryway alarmed Tuesday morning.
A student was arriving late at Ottawa Hills High School this morning when the metal detector alarm sounded as they passed through the entrance. One of the public safety officers supervising the arrival immediately made contact with the student, searched their bag, and discovered a loaded handgun.
Grand Rapids police were contacted immediately and the student was arrested. This matter will be handled in accordance with school policy and the law.
Families received a letter from OHHS Principal Dr. Timothy Mabin this afternoon. Classes were able to continue as scheduled.
“It is disheartening to hear that guns are winding up in the hands of our young people as we all know the devastating consequences that can and have come as a result,” Superintendent Dr. Leadriane Roby said. “I’m proud that the systems we have in place to protect our scholars and staff worked and that this gun never made it into our hallways. But my concern for our children extends beyond the walls of our schools. We cannot tolerate our children having this type of access to guns. It’s unacceptable.”
