The Grand Rapids Board of Education is announcing that it is accepting applications from those interested in filling the vacant position following Kristian Grant's election to the State House of Representatives. The term runs through December 2024. This process is in accordance with the Board Policy/Bylaws on Board Position Vacancies Section 1170 which requires a vacancy be filled within 30 days from the effective date of a resignation.
The following is a breakdown of the process that will be utilized for filling this vacant seat:
- December 4-December 10 - Request for Applicants: Applicants must submit a resume and a letter of intent explaining why they are seeking the office, why they believe they are qualified, and what experience they may have with GRPS and/or public education. To be legally qualified candidates must be a U.S. citizen, registered to vote, and live in the GRPS district. Applications are due by noon on Saturday, December 10, 2022.
Applications are requested to be sent via email to BOEApplications@grps.org. If electronic mail is not available, please deliver the application to the district office at the address below. If transportation is a barrier, please call 616.819.2193. While mailed applications will be accepted if received in time, given the timeline available for submissions mailing the materials is not advised.

Timeline:
- December 12, 2022 - Finalize Selection Criteria and Selection of Candidates to Interview:
- December 19, 2022 - Interviews and Final Vote: Interviews of the finalists will take place at a special work session of the Board of Education at 5:30 p.m. The Board will conduct its regular business first, then break, and reconvene to interview candidates, rank them, and vote.
- Swearing In: The new member will be sworn in at a regularly scheduled Board of Education meeting in January 2023.
