GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (GRPS) -- Grand Rapids Public Schools shared the following letter with parents regarding an incident at Dickinson Academy yesterday afternoon.

Dear Dickinson Families —

I’m writing to inform you about an incident toward the end of the school day yesterday that resulted in our building going into a code yellow, secured lockdown.

It came to our attention that an adult who had arrived to pick up a scholar may be in possession of a knife. Our staff responded immediately, confronted the individual, and once it was confirmed that he was carrying what appeared to be a folded pocket knife, he was directed to leave the school.

Because the person became agitated, our team contacted the Grand Rapids Police Department as a precaution and our scholars were held in place until the individual left the area.

We are aware of rumors that a gun was involved in this incident. That is not the case. No other weapon was alleged to have been involved.

This serves as an important reminder for those visiting our schools that no weapons of any kind are allowed in our buildings. We are grateful for the swift action of our staff in responding to this matter.

Please reach out if you have questions.
